Nokia urges Thai Gov to prepare for 5G

Nokia Networks, a leading mobile phone company, gears up for mobile phone development in the 5G era.

Sebastien Laurant, Country Director for Nokia Thailand, said the speed up of proper frequency assignment will help prepare Thailand to be ready for the coming of 5G technology.

He said 5G will help move Thailand towards Thailand 4.0. While ASEAN countries use 700MHz bandwidth spectrum, the average usage all over the world is between 2.5-2.6 and 3.5 GHz.

Thailand is in need of 5G to support the growth of data transfer via mobile phone. 5G will provide faster speed by 10 times with less than 10 milliseconds low latency.

Nokia viewed that the present-day technology cannot support future traffic in 2020 which will require higher capacity by 19% such as virtual reality and augmented reality which can be applied to various kinds of work such as event management, education, tourism, entertainment and in the car.

At the global level, 5G standard will be clearly defined by the end of this year including frequency, chip set, or devices that can support 5G that will be ready in the next 12 months.

The coming of 5G will expand consumer market opportunities by three times and respond to the industry revolution in 4.0 era which is required to automatically measure the capacity of machinery such as power plants, remote operations like drone, in-car control or Internet of Things.

Nokia has developed applications and technologies that can support 5G and applicable for both users and service providers. For example, it has developed 5G New Radio (NR) which will speed up mobile data transfer to be on par with fiber optic yet at lower costs per bit. Meanwhile, the efficiency in huge device connections which include systems, WiFi network distribution that cover wider areas will reduce cost of networks and increase average revenue for service providers. Portable network or ultra compact network that can be installed within minutes are able to work even when in emergency as well as using virtual reality or VR technology in football video game.
