NIA joins force with 4 Agencies to develop human resources in Electronic Design in a bid to uplift Thailand to be the hub of Knowledge Industry for foreign investors

Thai Embedded System Association (TESA), the Fine Arts Department, Silpakorn University, and CAT Telecom have joined force with National Innovation Agency (NIA) and embedded system entrepreneurs and more than 30 educational institutes to do human resources development, especially in electronic design, to add value that can support the country’s industrial sectors and attract foreign investors to invest more in the knowledge industry.

Together, they have organized the 13th Thailand Embedded System Skills Championship under the topic of ‘Smart National Historic Site 4.0.’

Electronic design is the industry that acquires knowledge to create new technologies and products. It is an upstream industry that brings the byproducts to further use in the automotive, telecommunication and electrical and electronic industries. At present, it is also an income-generating industry for the country which is worth hundreds of billion dollars throughout the world.

Meanwhile, the growth of the electronics industry in Thailand is still limited due to the shortage of personnel, lack of support from all parties, and the new generation people turn to study or work in the mainstream. The lack of support for tools or devices resulted in the discontinuation of the production of personnel, so the opportunity to grow knowledge-based businesses have been limited too.

Dr. Watchara Chatwiriya, the President of Thai Embeded System Association (TESA), said the TGR2019 (TESA Top Gun Rally 2019) or Embedded System Skills Thailand Championship will help motivate young generation to be more interested in Electronic Design. It will arrange training to provide basic knowledge on such subject and will provide daily practice for participants to learn to solve problems, work as a team and extend knowledge until they can come up with solutions. The competition provides opportunity for students, teachers, and entrepreneurs to exchange knowledge and expand the opportunities for cooperation in various aspects, and also opportunity to work with the experts, including doing projects with companies.

“Shifting the status of the country from being a user or contractor of electronic components to be the leader of Electronic Design requires skills and expertise of the Electronic Design professionals, aligned with the continued growth in the automotive, telecom and electronics markets worldwide. If Thailand can preserve the ancient sites with the use of sensors and signaling devices, this system will send information to tourists in the area, “said Dr. Watchara.

The creation of ARTBox Hardware Programming is a microcontroller board assembly and sensor for the detection of various surveillance measures and alert system for conservation of historic buildings. It must have the ability to send data over the LoRaWAN network. The device will be installed and be used to link with tourists’ smart phone to display relevant information. The Embedded System Skills Competition will be held between 7-12 January, 2019. About 300 computer science students from the Faculty of Engineering who have been selected by their institution will have to have problems to solve each day to accumulate points for 5 days. The final day will be the award ceremony which will be held at the Faculty of Science, Silpakorn University, Sanam Chandra Palace.
