Huawei ranks second in global smartphone market with Q2 market share of 15.4% and 41% increase in unit sales year on year

Huawei rose to the second position in global smartphone market, according Q2/2018 report from IDC, having secured a market share of 15.4% by shipping 54.2 million handsets to surpass Apple.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Huawei has now ranked at the second place in global smartphone market with a market share of 15.4% secured by shipping 54.2 million handsets in Q2/2018. Another report by canalys confirmed Huawei’s global ranking as No. 2 smartphone vendor with 54 million handsets shipped, up 41% year on year. This performance is partly due to a 7-million-unit strong sell-in of its latest flagship, HUAWEI P20 Series.

The secret of Huawei’s success comes to its consistent and massive investments into research and development. At Huawei, over 10% of revenue is invested in R&D every year. The European Commission’s 2017 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard report ranked Huawei at No. 6 among all the tech giants in terms of R&D investment. According to Huawei’s 2017 annual report, about 80,000 of its staff members worked for R&D, taking 45% of the total number of employees.
