Chula teams up with Huawei developing smart inventions supported by 5G with a plan to launch a robotic nursing assistant by two years, and create “robotic arms” the tools supporting telemedicine solution.

Dr. Supot Taechavorasinsakun, Chulalongkorn University Dean of Faculty of Engineering said Chulalongkorn University signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Huawei Technologies (Thailand) in academic collaboration promoting research and development on engineering innovation of 5G, AI and Cloud computing. The ultimate goal is “smart robot” an automated nursing assistant telemedicine technology. The collaboration is the further robotic development that the Faculty of Engineering has been working on such as delivery robot, robotic nursing assistant to communicate with patients.

The collaboration with Huawei will be enhanced with 5G technology which promises higher data transmission speed for video, camera, vital signs, CT scan. It will see a prototype robot and an experiment of “robotic arm”, a robotic-arm assisted surgery that can precisely remote function the same as surgeon within 1-2 years of the scheme. In the future, medical equipment will be able to control by 5G. It also sets up Learning Factory Center, the knowledge source of 5G technology and innovation applications.

The five-year term MoU will enhance potential and efficiency of engineering inventions with remote control, higher data speed transmission and better data processing and will open the business and industry sector to run a joint research and development.

Entrepreneurs which need to build an automated production process based on 5G technology are able to run a test and exchange knowledge for the further development or business up-scaling.

The private companies already participated the scheme are Advance Wireless Network Lo., Ltd and True Corporation

National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University set up 5G AI IoT Innovation Center as the 5G operation center where 5G equipment network and base station technology served for telecom services. Huawei has supported the research and engineering inventions of the Engineering Faculty driving digital transformation of Thailand.

“This collaboration is the learning exchange for ultimate benefits of inventions research and development, especially the robotic and controlling system with 5G technology to serve Thai society paying the way for innovation world of the future,” said Dr. Supot.
