A recent interesting movement is happening in the technology industry as four intenet giants: Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Twitter recently announced to join the Data Transfer Project (DTP),

an open source platform that enable data transfer between service to services so that users can access internet and transfer data from one platform to another.

After introducing source code, the four internet giants have a high hope that the new technology will help link data between websites and users can easily transfer data across platform without having to set new profile when they subscribe to the service.

They disclosed that DTP’s framework will work along with existing API (Application Programming Interface) and authentication system to access personal data and convert file into common format with the least adjustment. It will also be equipped with security feature to protect users’ privacy. And they will set up a central organization to be in charge of framework development in the future.

DTP’s source code framework will be on GitHub (web-based hosing service) which will support Export Type and online platform. The system will enable several types of data transfer including photos, emails, name lists and contact details, calendar and tasks or things to do lists.

The project will benefit users in the areas with low internet signal and to reduce usage of data. The product is still in initial stage and hope to have more organizations and experts joining in the future.

The latest announcement is the result of EU GDPR or General Data Protection Regulation which add the protection of users by requesting companies to provide data download tools for users. DTP will widely benefit not only in Europe but will benefit internet users as a whole.
