NIA chairman proposes a National Innovation System accelerator platform to move Thailand towards the goal of innovation nation.

According to Weerapong Pairsuwan, chairman of the National Innovation Board, in the fiscal year, the National Innovation Agency (NIA) plans to propose the new Higher Education, Innovation, Research and Science Ministry to consider the National Innovation System (NIS) accelerator platform to pooling innovation resources instead of fragmented research and innovation budgets.

In a bid to drive innovation of the country achieve the national goal of “Innovation Nation”, each agency still have an authority to allocate budgets based on their judgment in the  frame of NIS.

NIA continues to use the “Yothi Innovation District” as a test bed for a regulatory sandbox that allows developers to build innovation products or services to reduce pain points for patients, medical staff and citizens who live there.

In the meantime, the agency will continue to focus on the growth mechanism of innovators at all levels by providing funds, offering partnerships with universities and incubation, promoting innovation and setting up business matching for local startups. It also wants to expand internationally and encourage more collaboration between local and international startups.

NIA also has other growth mechanism such as market innovation to connect innovation entrepreneurs with new target groups, the Mind Credit project that enables entrepreneurs to access and use services from consulting services, as well as the “no-interest innovation project” that offers leasing fund without interest to entrepreneurs who want to increase the investment.

In the new fiscal year, NIA received a budget of 343 million baht, of which 216 million was allocated to strategic agendas, including dthe development and support of new entrepreneurs, startups and innovative SMEs. Funds were also spent on the Thematic Innovation projects as well as social and community innovation development projects. In the meantime, some 22 million baht of budget will be allocated for the Innovation Entrepreneur Development Project in the South.
